How Long Does Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Last?

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) can expire. However, when properly stored, it can last 12 months or longer. The actual shelf life of DEF depends heavily on temperature, sunlight exposure and storage conditions.

Can Hot or Cold Weather Damage DEF?

When it comes to DEF storage, heat is the bigger concern. High temperatures and direct sunlight accelerate DEF degradation. Guidance from the American Petroleum Institute (API) indicates DEF can last around 18 months when consistently stored at 77°F or below, compared with about 12 months at temperatures up to 86°F.

Cold temperatures are a little different. DEF freezes around 11°F and can expand when frozen, but properly formulated DEF maintains its quality after thawing, so there’s no need to add anything to the fluid to prevent freezing.

How Should You Store Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

Beyond temperature, protecting DEF from contamination is critical. Even small amounts of dirt, fuel or other substances can affect its quality and potentially damage a vehicle’s emissions system.

To protect your supply:

Place DEF in a cool, shaded location
Keep containers and tanks sealed
Use dedicated DEF tanks, hoses and dispensing equipment
Rotate your inventory so older DEF gets used first
Avoid transferring DEF using equipment used for other fluids
