Does Diesel Fuel Go Bad?

This is an excellent question and one that is regularly asked by our customers in Virginia and North Carolina. Unfortunately, diesel can and will go bad, especially if it’s not handled properly.

Typically, diesel fuel lasts anywhere from six months to a year before it starts to degrade. This breakdown is often a result of how diesel is refined and its elevated levels of impurities compared to what is found in gasoline.

You can tell diesel is past its prime by its smell and appearance. Fresh fuel should have a clear, amber color and smell like diesel. If it has a dark, cloudy appearance or a strong, sour smell, it has most likely gone bad. Another indication of degraded diesel is if it starts forming clumps when stored for a long time.

Despite the inevitable degradation of this important fuel, there are ways to prolong its life and help ensure its effectiveness in your vehicles.

Let’s Make It Last!

Helping diesel fuel stay fresh is not hard, but it requires some straightforward steps that you can easily take to ensure its proper functionality.

Step One: Store Diesel in Clean, Dry Containers.

Preventing water from mixing with the fuel will help avoid moisture contamination that breaks down your diesel. If water has gotten in, don’t fret. You can use a desiccant or water absorber to remove moisture from the fuel.

Step Two: Use Your Diesel Relatively Quickly and Keep It Cool

To prevent oxidation from happening, it’s critical to keep your diesel fuel in a cool container. Since that can be easier said than done during the summer months in Virginia and North Carolina, it’s best to use your fuel no later than a year after purchasing.

Since we offer complete installation and maintenance for fuel storage tanks and dispensers, we can take care of this step for you!

Step Three: Watch For Impurities

Make sure to check for signs of contamination before using the diesel and to filter it if necessary. You can do this by using a simple filter or a polishing service to get rid of the impurities from your fuel.
